Women Who Make Waves: Lindsey Smith of Acuarela Swimwear

Angela Zancanaro

I first met Lindsey Smith eight years ago on the beach at Cerritos, not long after I moved to Baja. She was one of the few entrepreneurs in the area back then, and I remember walking down the beach and seeing almost everyone wearing one of her bikinis. Her designs quickly became some of the only swimwear I wore for years. Lindsey’s journey and fearless dedication to her craft were a big part of what inspired me to take my own leap of faith—to pursue my passions and trust that it would all work out.

Now based in Santa Cruz, Lindsey is navigating a new chapter as a mom while continuing her mission to design and sew swimwear for everyBODY. Her story is one of creativity, determination, and a love for the ocean that’s reflected in every piece she makes. I had the chance to ask Lindsey about her journey, her creative process, and what inspires her most.

When did you first fall in love with the ocean?

Both my parents also grew up in the ocean and shared their passion with me when I was a baby. I fell in love with it when I was very young.

How has your connection to the ocean shaped who you are?

Because of surfing, I am connected to the ocean pretty much every day. Being in the ocean so much has helped me relax, stay fit, and appreciate all beings that I share the space with.

What’s something you wish more people knew about you or your profession?

Fast fashion is killing our environment. Making clothing only as it is ordered is the only way we can help slow the crisis. My profession greatly minimizes the textile waste that is ending up in our beloved ocean.

What first inspired you to pursue your passion?

I started sewing swimsuits because I was a broke surf bum and could not afford them. It became my passion very quickly as I realized I could make custom-sized suits for all types of bodies.

Did you face any significant challenges or obstacles along the way? How did you overcome them?

The cost of fabrics and other sewing materials doubled in a few years. Having to raise my prices was a challenge. Luckily, I already had made a name for myself by then, and my customers were willing to pay extra for my work.

What motivates you to keep going, even when things get tough?

The one thing I have noticed to be true after doing this for almost 15 years is there will be ups and downs. And for me, that means sales. If I am selling less, I feel like the end of my career is near and I need to just give up now. I wonder if I am getting too old and don't know anything about fashion anymore. But right on cue, I will be back on the up. Now I am always ready for when I come to another low, and I don't let it affect me. Having that experience motivates me to keep going.

What are some of your most memorable underwater or marine experiences?

While surfing, I have witnessed many marine experiences. My favorite was when I was randomly surrounded by thousands of pearl-like jellyfish that touched every inch of my skin. The feeling was like nothing I have felt before. Or another time while surfing, I noticed the sea turning red around me. After paddling back to the beach a little freaked out, I saw that it had been a mother whale giving birth only a few yards away.

What advice would you give to someone looking to follow in your footsteps?

If you wish to follow in my footsteps, I recommend you give it your all and not treat it as

a hobby or a part-time job. The harder you work, the more successful you will be.

How do you define success?

My personal definition of success is happiness. If you are doing something that makes you money and you are also passionate about it, then you are successful.

What’s next for you in your journey?

I would like to open a little shop that I can also use as my studio. And finally move my business out of my home.
